I think art makes life a better, richer, more enjoyable experience than if it didn't exist. I love art in all its forms, be it singing & playing, literature, dance, drama, arts & entertainment, writing and so on and so on. And because I love art so much I'm sometimes bothered when artists that wield tremendous influence over our culture deny any responsibility they have in promoting goodness in art.
I recently read an uber-famous pop star state that she doesn't have any desire to be a role-model for kids and that she just wants to make music, case in point while scanning articles on Yahoo. And she is not alone in this attitude. In fact many highly influential artists share her perspective.
It's simply no secret that kids look up the most popular artists of the day and often attempt to emulate those artists in style and so on. The problem that I sometimes have with that attitude is that these artists are role-models to our children, whether they like it or not, whether they accept it or not.
Therefore for so many artists try to cash in on our kids but then simply reject any responsibility towards the kind of art they produce saddens me. It's not that I don't respect an individuals right to create whatever art they so choose, I do. As a lover of art I have no desire to limit any artist in their creative endeavors, but as the saying goes "with great power comes great responsibility" and I think too many artists have chosen to forget or ignore this creed.
In conclusion, I guess I just wish more popular artists of today would not only succeed in the marketplace but would embrace their status as role models as well. That is my love for art in a nut shell.
