There is a huge movement across the United States to invest in eco friendly business practices. Many companies are instituting many "green" initiatives across their business plans to help decrease their companies impact on the global environment. Not only are companies making changes to their businesses they are making an effort to utilize contractors and other business services that are also making an effort to "go green". One of the easiest places to change your company's impact on the environment is to look for a printing company that has instituted eco friendly processes at their printing house. Printed marketing materials like business cards are still a very important part of doing business so while eliminating these valuable tools is not an option, choosing a company who keeps the environment in mind when producing them is an easy way to make a positive impact. Here are a few things you should look for when searching for an eco friendly printer for your business or organizations printed materials.

While recycling has become a household term and a process that is part of many Americans' daily lives, not all printing companies have committed themselves to participating in a paper recycling plan. Asking the simple question, "Do you recycle your waste paper?" could go a long way toward identifying whether or not your printer is employing eco friendly business practices. Also, ask them if they have an administrative office recycling plan, if they do they will be more than happy to tell you all about it!

Sometime the building that the printing house is located in can be saving or wasting energy. Companies that are truly committed to making eco friendly business decisions often choose a building that is made with sustainable products like stone or brick. These materials also help regulate temperatures during warm and cold months decreasing the need for excessive electricity used to heat or cool less eco friendly buildings. Large scale buildings also have extensive lighting systems. A "green" business can easily make an impact by changing the types of bulbs they use throughout their location. Proper disposal of old bulbs that could contain mercury or other harmful substances is also an important part of taking your business is an eco friendly direction.

Manufacturing materials is another way that a printing house can take steps to clean up their business. Using low emission chemicals during the printing and coating processes is just one of many changes a printing company can make. Low VOC inks, Low ammonia aqueous coating, and offering a recycled paper option to customers can help make the printing process safer and greener.

Digital printing techniques have also introduced a whole new array of green products. The dry inks used in the machines are non toxic and reduce the exposure of workers to chemicals. These products and all other waste colorants and other chemicals used in all printing processes can be recycled.

Any or all of these steps can be taken by printers to make their business more eco friendly. The next time you are searching for a company to partner with to create your printed marketing materials ask prospective companies about these "green" steps and choose the company who is utilizing them.
