A window sash refers to that framed part of the screen which moves and holds the sheets of glass in place. A Cord is linked to either side of a sliding one such that it connects these weights to the sliding sash and the screen moves easily. However a broken sash cord makes a single- or double-hung window difficult to open. Here is how to change a broken cord on a sash window.
If any of these two frame string is broken, then it would be very difficult open the screen. Hence, the broken cord should be replaced appropriately for the window to function well.
There are series of stops that are attached to the side screen frames or jamb which help in the working of sashes. Remove these screen stops first so as to swing out the lower frame and pull the sash cords free. Pry the parting strip that connects the lower and upper sashes. This removes the upper part too.
Once these steps are complete, feed the new string on top off the pulley and into the crevice that holds the weight. This is done by threading the replacement cord through the pulley and down to the weights. Tie a piece of string, 2 foot long to one end of the new cord.
The other end of the thread is attached to a screw. Drop the it at end of the string over the pulley on top of the framing and grab the screw out of the pocket by dropping the new threads behind the frame. Pull the replacement string with additional string through the weight pocket and then cut off the string. Tie the string end around the weight and set it back into the weight pocket.
The other end of the new string is cut near the framing sill. Locate the position of the hole on it. Install the string through the window. This is done by cutting the ends and inserting them through the top of the sash.
It is now possible to bind the replacement string around the weight and place it into weight pocket. The last step is to replace the new string through the window by cutting the string ends and putting it in through the top of the frame.
