If you are installing new windows time will come when you need to consider whether wooden sash windows or plastic windows will make a better impression in your office environment.

Windows are an important part of an office setting. They draw the eye and call attention to themselves. In making a positive impression on clients and visitors you windows can help or detract. It is important that the design and decor of you office reflect your good taste and convey a sense of your values.

Anyone who saw the 1967 film The Graduate, starring Dustin Hoffman, or any of the many theatrical versions, will remember the advice from Mr. McGuire: "Plastics". He was correct, of course, that there was a great future in plastics. People who have invested and worked in plastics have made a lot of money and provided many exciting and innovative products.

But even knowing about all the innovative products and successful career that have grown out of the plastics industry people are suspicious. You don't have to have seen The Graduate to have the feeling that plastics represent something superficial, disposable and artificial. Even as people use plastics at home, at work, in industry and at school they harbor an awareness that these picnic forks or this computer keyboard is not meant to last.

While we all use plastic products and are grateful for them, plastic still evokes certain negative feelings in people. People who seem to lack depth or integrity are often described as being plastic.

When people transact business they want to work with someone who can be trusted. They want someone who acts out of old fashioned values such as honesty and integrity. They want someone with a solid work ethic.

The choice of material you use in your office can hint at your values. Wood gives people a sense of history and tradition. It put people in touch with the craftsmen of times past when quality work was valued and a man's word was his bond.

BBC recently broadcast a story about a "plague" of windows in historic buildings being replaced with plastic windows. There were arguments that the new windows are more energy saving as well as cheaper to install. But others argue that wooden sash windows can be made energy efficient and are more cost effective over the long run. People who value historic architecture are horrified that anyone would even consider destroying the integrity of a building by imposing plastic in the structure.

If your office is in an older building you definitely don't want to introduce plastic where once there were wooden sash windows. People will notice. The effect will be disturbing. It will be evident that corners were cut and short cuts were taken.

In a newer building wood sash windows can stand as a reminder of the quality of workmanship that has not quite gone out of style in your office.
