Halfway down their stay at Harvard, Tyler and Cameron teamed up another student named Divya Narendra and came up with a plan to connect Harvard students using a social network. It was to be called HarvardConnect and they were then planning on expanding it to include students from other universities. They hired a student as a programmer to write the code for the project.

After a couple of programmers had done some partial work on it and left, Mark Zuckerberg was brought in to finish it up. It was almost 2004 by hen and Zuckerberg continued to work on it while developing his own social network simultaneously. He launched his own version called thefacebook.com before HarvardConnection could be completed.

HarvardConnection was eventually launched and it was then renamed as ConnectU. This entity then proceeded to file suit against Facebook claiming that Zuckerberg had appropriated their idea for Facebook and even used source code that was developed for HarvardConnect. After years of wrangling and counter-lawsuits, both sides eventually agreed to a $65 million settlement in 2008.

This story has become part of Facebook's well-known history when it was portrayed in the film 'The Social Network'. The film garnered eight Oscar nominations and won three. To add some more fuel to the fire, ConnectU dragged Facebook back in court in 2010. This time, the claim was that Facebook had not correctly provided a value for the shares they were allotted under the settlement.

They say it was actually closer to $11 million than the $45 million figure given to them by Facebook. Based on the market value of their share, it was worth around $120 million in Aug 2010. If they got the bigger settlement they were now asking for, it would be worth around $466 million.

Often found in older homes, sash windows represent technology of some antiquity. You may have heard of sash window refurbishment but do not know what it is. Maybe you know about them and do not like the way they work, or do not work. Perhaps you wish they did work better, but do not know how they are supposed to work, or how they can be repaired.

These have probably existed since at least 1658, beyond that we do not know. They were commonly used in Edwardian, Victorian, and Georgian style homes in England. A double panel version, with both top and bottom movable panels, became quite popular in the United States. Lately they have become less so with increasing use of air conditioning systems. It has become common for many windows to be designed not be open-able at all.

These efficient devices are superior in performance and provide healthier air. Having a top panel that opens downward and a bottom panel which will open by raising, openings at two different heights are created. This results in a natural circulation of air in the room. Hot air rises toward the ceiling and finds its way out the top. As it leaves the room it draws cool, fresh air into the room from below to replace it. This cooler air stays near the bottom of the room and acts to force warm air out the top.

Thus we have a naturally operating system of air circulation, saving electricity and wear on the forced air system. That system can be reserved for very hot days or parts of days. In this way maintenance work and system replacement can be delayed and minimized.

There seems to be much concern about outdoor air pollution. It is known however, that indoor air quality in the average home is about seven times worse than outside. There are several reasons for this. The materials used in much home construction is laden with chemicals like formaldehyde which continually out gas into the air. Examples of materials are carpeting, paneling, paint, and drywall. Furniture materials have the same problem. Also pesticides, so called air fresheners, home cleaning products, scented candles, perfumes and body care products give off large quantities of toxins.

New homes are especially hazardous. Many of these chemicals are depleted in the first two years after construction, and filtered from the building through the lungs and bodies of the inhabitants. Exposure to small amount of chemicals may appear to not have any observable effect on someone's health. The cumulative effect, however, can be drastic.

Some toxins never are expelled from the body and the toxic load can build to a point where the body is simply unable to cope any longer. Mysterious, chronic health issues may start to show up. These might not ever be associated with toxic air at home.

The level of individual toxins could be insignificant but the cumulative effect of hundreds or thousands can have a major effect on the inhabitant's health. Buildings that are sealed tightly and recirculate the same toxic air can have dangerous buildups of harmful chemicals. Air conditioners will not filter them from the home. Sash window refurbishment to make those windows work properly can be a step in the direction of creating a healthy environment at home.

In the sixties aluminium framed windows became popular and supplanted the old wooden types in popular architecture. Presently the latest technique is to use vinyl frames. These frames are specially designed to hold insulating double paned glass for saving energy. Of course these new technologies can be used in older homes with the wooden frame glass assemblies. When used though, the look and feel of the home is changed into a half historic half modern look. To preserve that older look many owners are doing sash window refurbishment rather than vinyl replacement and updating.

Inside these wood framed panes, and inside the casing are two iron counter weights. These weights are attached to a rope that runs through a pulley which you should see at the top of the casement in the channel the framework runs up and down in. If it is a working window you should see the rope in the middle of the channel.

Over time this rope breaks as it wears through with use. When that happens the weight drops inside the casement and the window is immovable. If the other weight is still attached the frame will jam when you try to open it. Frequently both ropes are missing on these types of assembly, presumably because the user wants to open the window and hopes if the odd weight out is cut off as well the frame will not jam.

After the ropes break the window is only opened with great difficulty. Sometimes they are painted over and over and eventually welded shut with all the paint.

Fixing a sash can be easy provided it has not been painted shut. These type of glass frames are enclosed in a outer frame or casing. On either side is a access port of sorts that can be opened to allow you to find the old weight and hopefully reattach the rope to the weight. If you look closely on either side you should be able to see the place where this access panel meets the casing. This can only be done with an open window.

If you replace the rope, which is a great idea, nylon will be a good choice as it doesn't wear. All rope stretches over time so be sure the length is right. The weight of a open frame should be about the bottom frame of the window opening. It should swing freely when the unit is all the way open.

The rope connects the weight to the moving wooden frame. This will mean the movable frame will need to be removed from its casing to reattach the rope. After you have pulled it free from the casing, check the side stile of the frame. Fittings suitable for tying the free end of the rope should be available.

Old fashioned windows with the proper materials and installation can be as efficient as the modern ubiquitous vinyl ones. Sash window refurbishment can retain the historic charm you home had in the past. With proper care some maintenance there is no reason these windows can not last as long as the newer models. This can be quite a job so working or consulting with a knowledgeable construction contractor with experience in older homes is recommended.
