This century has seen the emphasis on both businesses and individuals to monitor their emissions switch to ways of looking at themselves as to how they can become environmentally friendly and reduce their carbon footprint.

To be carbon neutral, either as a business or an individual has two definitions: - first of all, it addresses the exercise of balancing the carbon dioxide put into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels with renewable energy that produces an equal or greater amount of useful energy - the idea of this belong to get the net carbon emission to zero, or use renewable energy only. It also defines the exercise of carbon offsetting.

Below are 8 tips on how you can become carbon neutral both as an individual and as a business:

Clean Energy - obtain energy from suppliers that only use 100% renewable sources such as water, sun and wind. This type of energy does not pollute or contribute to climate change. Also look to use energy efficient light bulbs at home and on your business premises.

Sustainable Flooring - it is quite possible to find flooring that combines wood with many natural sustainable resources, such as Marmoleum.

Eco Friendly Air Con - air conditioning units that are manufactured to ISO 14001 environmental certification are energy efficient.

Sustainable Insulation - any insulation products that are produced using sand and recycled glass are environmentally friendly and will help to reduce the loss of heat from ceilings, windows, floors etc.

IT - see to it that your Information Technology infrastructure comprises of products that adopt strict Energy Star standards.

Paper - reduce the amount of paper products that your business uses on a daily basis by implementing a digital alternative. If you do have to use paper, make sure it is recycled.

Recycle - be sure to recycle your paper, glass and plastic waste whenever possible.

Use Ethical Water Sources - there are water suppliers who participate in schemes that see profits channelled into clean water projects. Fair trade coffee and tea will also go a long way too.

A carbon neutral business is becoming increasingly important as it's a great way of showing the corporate world you have a social responsibility. Over the past few years more and more companies are announcing that they intend to become fully carbon neutral.
