A Perspective On Ethics In The World Today

Ethics are the infrastructure of our experience in the world. Our experience in life is measured primarily by how capable we are to be consistent with our own inner guide of ethics. In life, ethics are critical because they form the inner guide that every person walks around with. In a world in which there is rage, war and hatred, having a solid inner guide is crucial. How can we influence positive change to people and circumstances that treat others, and themselves poorly, and what can we do to inspire a solid code of ethics within?

Ethics are identified as a set of moral principles. Our moral principles are based on what we think is good or bad, sort of a code of conduct - and ethics are our ability to be consistent with that. In an ideal world, our inner beliefs do not harm others or ourselves, and we are consistent with them!

I will never forget how moved I was the very first time I read the words spoken by Gandhi, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." And because I get that change starts internally, I will share the ways I will contribute to change in the world.

I commit to learning to accept myself, to valuing myself, understanding myself, and to being compassionate with myself. I will endeavor to get a deeper understanding of humanity and better understand the similarities between myself and others. I will clarify what I believe is good and bad, my morals, and evaluate whether the things I think are good are destructive to others. Because it is never my intention to thwart anyone else in a way that is negative, I will always look to identify if I am acting destructive to someone else, and if so determine how we are alike so that I might not objectify the person, and not cause them harm.

It is great to see that universally, there are in fact not just individuals, but organizations that commit to affecting change through non-violence.

Gandhi was great at this, motivating others to grow, change, and live in peace. His "be the change" reasoning expresses quite well that the change starts within. Modern day leaders, like Keith Raniere, are affecting change in their own way. Keith Raniere started NXIVM, which guides individuals to a realization of great potential and a deeper connection with humanity, by building a strong ethical foundation. Building this ethical foundation can do wonders in the way of helping one move beyond conflict, to a more humane existence.
